Ocean Center gets sporty this weekend

The Ocean Center welcomes not one, but two sporting events to the facility this weekend, hosting a volleyball tournament and cheerleading competition. The Ocean Center expects the events to attract 8,000 attendees over two days.

Joseph Volleyball Camps (JVC) returns to the Ocean Center this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13, for its Florida Holiday Challenge, which serves as the opening event of the 2020-21 season. The tournament features over 150 teams, with the majority traveling from throughout the state. JVC will return to the Ocean Center for two events in January, the Florida Winter Volleyball Festival and the Nike Daytona Beach 100, and again in May to finish the regular season with the FC Power Championships.

Also this weekend, East Coast Championships brings the Florida Kick Off to the Ocean Center arena Saturday, Dec. 12. The cheer competition will feature teams of varying age groups and skills levels battling on the mat for the title of first place.

“The pandemic has impacted practically all businesses and industries, including convention centers,” said Ocean Center Director Tim Riddle. “While many events have gone virtual, sporting events and competitions cannot take place through a screen. At the Ocean Center, we’re working with clients to implement COVID-19 safety protocols and employ creative use of our space so we can continue to host events, while also providing a safe environment for both competitors and spectators.”

And the fun doesn’t end this weekend! Next Saturday, Dec. 19, the Ocean Center welcomes a new event—Jingle Brawl. The event is organized by the North American Wresting Alliance, a promotion initially launched in the 1990s that is reemerging to the delight of fans. Tickets for the event are available on Ticketmaster.

The Ocean Center has implemented measures that mitigate and reduce the spread of COVID-19. The measures include the mandatory wearing of face masks for employees and guests, enhanced sanitation, and social distancing protocols. The Ocean Center also works with each event to implement additional safety measures at the request of the client.
