USA Powerlifting Nationals begin at Ocean Center-Daytona Beach

USA Powerlifting begins six days of competition today with the 2021 Nationals, taking place for the first time at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. Over the next week, athletes will compete for the national title in youth, master’s, raw, open and bench divisions.

While weightlifting is made up of two lifts— the Snatch and the Clean-and-Jerk, powerlifting comprises three lifts—the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. Powerlifting competitions may be comprised of one, two or all three of the lifting disciplines. Athletes are categorized by sex, age and bodyweight.

Along with bragging rights, athletes are also competing for a spot at the 2021 International Powerlifting Federation World Championships.

“The Ocean Center is always excited to welcome a new event to our facility,” said Ocean Center director Tim Riddle. “After an uncertain year for convention centers and event planners alike, it’s refreshing to begin welcoming back our clients, especially those who are new and experiencing what the Ocean Center and surrounding area have to offer for the first time.”

Spectators may purchase tickets for $10 per session online or at the door with cash. The Ocean Center was scheduled to host the 2020 Nationals but, due to the pandemic, the event was rescheduled.
