Team Florida AAU Gymnastics Southern Regional Championship to take place at Ocean Center

The Team Florida Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Gymnastics Southern Regional Championship will take place at the Ocean Center May 21 and 22. The event will feature 1,300 athletes of varying ages and abilities from across the southeastern United States.

“Team Florida AAU Gymnastics hosts the Florida State Competition at the Ocean Center every other year, and after seeing the continued success of that event, the AAU National Gymnastics Board of Directors decided it would be an ideal venue for this year’s Southern Regional Championship,” said Team Florida AAU Gymnastics District Chair Kathy Stuenkel. “Not only is the venue perfect, but the competitors and their families also enjoy the destination. Our attendees appreciate the opportunity to make the visit more than just a competition by appreciating all that the area has to offer.”

The May competition will include athletes from 5 years and up and of varying skill levels. In addition to the competitive age group and optional divisions, a third group of competitors will participate in the ladies division. This division was created for athletes’ high school age and above who enjoy the sport and wish to stay active in competition in a level that is challenging yet maintainable.

“The ladies division was created for the many athletes who love our sport but don’t have the time or resources to dedicate their lives to training the way that they once did,” said Stuenkel. “Gymnastics is a beautiful, challenging sport for individuals of all ages. This program provides friendly, positive competition for those gymnasts who want to stay active and involved, and also creates opportunities for more senior athletes to offer maturity and leadership to the sport.”

The AAU Gymnastics Southern Regional Championship takes place May 21 and 22 in the Ocean Center exhibit hall. Admission is cash only and is $20 for the day or $30 for two days for individuals 10 years of age and older, $10 for the day or $15 for two days for youths 5 to 9, and free for children 4 and under.

The AAU was established in 1888 and is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, multi-sport event organizations in the world, offering 41 sports programs.
