Roman College Basketball Invitational announces teams

In less than a week, the Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI) returns to the Ocean Center for the 2022 competition, and we now know the teams that will be participating.

The Gazelle Group, organizer of the Roman CBI, announced yesterday that this year’s field of 16 teams will include Abilene Christian, Boston University, California Baptist, Drake, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee, UNC Asheville, UNCG, UNCW, Northern Colorado, Ohio, Purdue Fort Wayne, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, Troy, and VMI.

Prior to 2021, the CBI tournament took place on college campuses, rather than in one location.

“Previously, we hosted the tournament on college campuses, but because it takes place during spring break, campus communities were often empty” said Gazelle Group President Rick Giles. “Having the CBI at the Ocean Center works great because not only is it a perfect facility for our needs, but it provides a destination for the competitors. Players along with their friends and families have an opportunity to take a little time to enjoy the sun and sand and all the entertainment the area offers.”

The only challenge to hosting the event at a central location is that not all fans have the means to attend. And that’s where the local community comes in. Roman CBI and the Ocean Center are encouraging residents to fill the stands in support of the teams.

“We’re thrilled that the Gazelle Group chose to bring the CBI back to the Ocean Center for their 2022 tournament,” said Ocean Center Director Tim Riddle. “They’ve given us the opportunity to host, and now it’s our chance to give back to them by having our community show up, cheer loudly and create a positive, energetic environment that fosters great competition. Let’s make these teams feel welcome!”

First round games take place March 19 and 20, with the quarterfinals March 21, semifinals March 22 and the championship March 23. Tickets are $10 daily and can be purchased at https://www.ticketmaster.com/college-basketball-invitational-tickets/artist/1845977 or at the Ocean Center box office on CBI game days.

ESPN2 and Flo Hoops will be the broadcast home for the Roman CBI. Flo Sports will broadcast the first three days of the tournament and ESPN2 will air the semifinals and championship game.
