Volusia County Welcomes Veterans to Annual Stand Down Event at the Ocean Center on March 21 and 22

In a unified effort to combat veteran homelessness and strengthen the local veteran community, the annual Veterans Stand Down will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 21 and 22 at the Ocean Center, 101 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach. Stand Downs originated during the Vietnam War as safe retreats where combat units could rest, recover, and enjoy camaraderie in a secure environment. Today's Stand Downs continue this tradition of providing a safe space for veterans to access resources and rebuild connections within their military community.

“Our Veterans Stand Down is more than just an event; it’s an opportunity for veterans to gain the resources they need and the camaraderie they seek,” explains Scott Olson, Interim Director of Volusia County Veterans Services. “We’re bringing together services and support under one roof where all veterans can share experiences and support one another."

Stand Down events connect veterans with vital services, fostering community support. Veterans and their families can access an extensive range of services including:

  • Housing assistance and shelter services
  • Medical and mental health support
  • Substance abuse treatment referrals
  • VA benefits consultation and claims assistance
  • Employment resources and job assistance
  • Legal aid and consultation
  • Health and wellness screenings
  • Free haircuts, clothing, and food

A key highlight is the Veterans Benefits Administration's Mobile Compensation and Pension Exam Unit, allowing veterans with pending claims to complete exams on-site for potential same-day decisions. Participating agencies include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Supportive Services for Veteran Families, Florida Department of Health Volusia, Volusia County Human Resources, VITAS Healthcare, CareerSource Flagler Volusia, Daytona State College, and the Daytona Beach Vets Center.

Sponsorship opportunities are available through a partnership with Pay-It-Forward Packs, a nonprofit supporting homeless veterans. New clothing, hygiene items, non-perishable food, and volunteer support are all welcome. To sponsor, volunteer, or donate, visit www.volusia.org/standdown.
